How was the Bible composed? A Primer on Contemporary Research
Shir Hadash member James Redfield, PhD, assistant professor of Biblical and Talmudic literature at St. Louis University, will lead our learning and discussion. Since the nineteenth century, biblical scholars have spilled much ink trying to identify the distinguishing features, worldviews, and interactions among sources in the Tanakh. New methods focus more on the creativity of oral and scribal transmission, challenging the model that the Bible was composed by a simple cut-and-paste method. The main methodological debates will be explored using specific examples from biblical passages. Shir Hadash is located in the J’s Staenberg Family Complex Arts & Education Building (upper level), 2 Millstone Campus Dr., St. Louis, MO 63146.
